it was also necessary to tangibly witness its presence.
Therefore, similar to what happened during the
Renaissance era, when the goldsmiths contribued, like
patrons, to the realization and adaption of well-deserved
initiatives, the Ariento consortium jointly started to
demonstrate that the historical relationship between the
city, its companies, and its culture, can be not only
maintained, but even strenghened. To cite an old
example, it's enough to remember (recognising the
importance that silversmiths, goldsmiths and jewellers
had within the art of Por Santa Maria), the first child
received into the Hospital of the Innocenti, created by
Brunelleschi, which the Arts had founded, given the name
of two precious stones: Agate Emerald. Getting instead to
the pledge of the Ariento consortium, it must be said
that in June 1993, not long ago, it wanted to celebrate
solemnly, the re-opening of the Uffizi Gallery, struck by
a bombing that, in the preceding May, caused great damage
to the Florentine artistical patrimony and claimed many
innocent victims. They therefore created a silver medal, in the style of the
sculptress Amalia Ciardi Duprè, with the image of
Giuditta killing Oloferne, to represent the victory of
good over evil, which was offered to the first thousand
visitors to the Uffizi, situated where the Grand ducal
workshops for silversmiths masters, once stood. Then, in
1995, the "Ariento" offerend to restore, at its
expense, using its silversmiths, the first group of
ancient lithurgic silverware, gravely damaged in the same
tragic explosion of 1993. |
